Нестор Іванович Махно is a hero of ours. Not only because he fought for self-rule rather than rulers from outside, but more because he was an innovator and inventor who came to support Ukrainian language and culture, later in life.

Like all people who fought against occupation and exploitation Makhno was involved in conflict and violence. Importantly, whether it was external or internal oppression, Makhno opposed it, often succeeding against impossible odds.

Credited as the inventor of the Tachanka horse-drawn platform mounting a heavy machine gun, Makhno came from extreme poverty to be a respected leader of his community and of the Makhnovist Movement.

It is our view that the Ukrainian small business owner is the equivalent of the peasants of years past, struggling to develop opportunities once dominated by state control and Oligarchy. In this we see parallels and differences to what Makhno experienced.

The prizes honour Nestor Makhno and will be awarded on his birthday 27th October every year.
